Spiritual Themes in the Chamber Vocal Works of Ostap Bobykevych

This article investigates previously unknown chamber vocal works by Ostap Bobykevych, a composer of the Ukrainian diaspora. It examines the artistic legacy of this prominent cultural and educational figure who represented Ukrainian musical art abroad in the latter half of the 20th century. The study reveals that Bobykevych’s creative heritage remains largely unexplored. Particular attention is given to the prolonged preservation of his manuscripts in foreign archives and private collections, with their repatriation to Ukraine only becoming possible following the country’s independence. The article analyzes Bobykevych’s musical interpretations of spiritually themed literary texts, focusing especially on poems by Markiian Shashkevych and Volodymyr Yaniv, sourced from the private music archive of Yosyf Hoshuliak. A musicological analysis of these art songs highlights the expressive techniques employed in both the vocal and instrumental parts. The spiritual essence of the poetic sources is traced, emphasizing the vivid imagery through which Shashkevych and Yaniv express their concerns for Ukraine’s fate via sacred appeals to the Divine. The study demonstrates that the deeply patriotic themes of these texts inspired Bobykevych to create chamber vocal works such as “Slava Bohu” (Glory to God), “Otche Nash” (Our Father), and “I Ostavy Nam Dolhy Nashi” (And Forgive Us Our Debts). The article uncovers the dramaturgical and formal methods employed by the composer, marked by characteristics of free, continuous thematic development. The relationship between text and solo voice is explored, revealing a declamatory-recitative vocal style grounded in folk song traditions, akin to the duma epic form within Bobykevych’s chamber vocal music. The piano accompaniment is described as complementing and enhancing the spiritual and patriotic atmosphere of the works. In conclusion, the article affirms that these vocal-instrumental compositions stand as striking examples of music grounded in folkloric and Romantic stylistic traits.
