The Purpose and Value of Editorial Content at JAMA Health Forum

JAMA Health Forum's mission 1 is to publish rigorous, peer-reviewed research that advances scholarship in health policy and health services. At a time of both increasing public scrutiny of the scientific enterprise and a growing need for real-time, evidence-based insights to inform rapidly evolving health policy, the role of editorial content in peer-reviewed, academic journals warrants close attention. We suggest that providing a forum for evidence-based opinion is essential to promote public trust in science, scientific progress and dissemination, and the use of scientific insights in decision-making.Here, we detail what we view as the important role and purpose of editorial content in academic journals, including JAMA Health Forum. The Role of Editorial Content in Academic JournalsEditorial content serves 3 distinct purposes relative to other articles.First, relative to research articles, editorial content allows experts to bring the breadth of collective knowledge and evidence to bear on timely policy issues.Policy debates often evolve faster than new empirical evidence can be generated or published.Editorial formats allow JAMA Health Forum to respond rapidly to policy developments and emerging crises such as a pandemic or health system failure. The ability to publish informed, credible perspectives in real time helps ensure that the journal and the expert community remain relevant and trusted sources when navigating fast-moving issues.Second, editorials provide interpretation and synthesis of evidence that cannot be easily accomplished otherwise.Health policy decisions are rarely informed by a single study or even a single body of literature.Even the most rigorous research findings must be interpreted in light of existing policies, evolving evidence, and feasibility.Editorial content helps readers situate evidence within this broader context. In this way, editorial content functions as connective tissue, integrating disparate findings into a coherent narrative.Third, editorial content provides a platform for debate and discussion in the research and policy community that complements empirical research. It invites scholars and practitioners to propose policies, question prevailing assumptions, or educate the research community on an emerging or complex issue. These contributions are essential for innovation, including novel lines of inquiry, in health policy and practice.By including multiple perspectives-including, and perhaps particularly, dissenting or less popular ones-editorial content also fosters the kind of critical debate that is essential for the intellectual community. What Sets Academic, Editorial Content ApartEditorial content acts as a crucial bridge between research evidence and health policy decisions. In the context of a publishing universe where there are a range of outlets for scholars and laypersons alike to publish viewpoints and opinion pieces, it is also important to emphasize the particular role of editorial content in a scientific journal like JAMA Health Forum. There are several key features that set academic, editorial content apart and which we value in submissions.Relative to other venues, JAMA Health Forum targets a more specific audience.Mainstream op-eds are typically intended for a general audience and aim to influence public opinion or political discourse.Academic editorials, by contrast, aim to persuade, contextualize, and inform a professional
