Instructors’ Perspectives on Teaching Turkish for Specific Purposes: The Case of Military Turkish

This study aims to identify the needs and expectations related to the teaching of Turkish for specific purposes (militaryTurkish) by collecting the opinions of instructors who teach Turkish to foreign military personnel. To this end, a surveymodel was employed in the research. The data were collected through a needs analysis questionnaire administered to23 instructors who teach Turkish language courses to military personnel in various countries. The results revealed thatforeign military personnel most urgently need to develop their speaking skills. At the same time, writing was identified as the skill in which they gained the least competence following instruction. The results also underscored the necessity of developing a specialized curriculum for military Turkish, along with the preparation of materials aligned with such a program. Additionally, it was found that compiling a glossary tailored to the relevant fields of expertise would be beneficial for learners to use Turkish both inside and outside the classroom. This study is expected to contribute to the literature and future research in the field of military Turkish instruction. Cite this article as: Arat, E., & Fidan, D. (2025).
