The Wandering Fibroid: Case Report on Diagnostic Challenges and Surgical Management
A bstract Parasitic leiomyomas, also known as wandering fibroids, are rare and challenging to diagnose. These ectopic fibroids typically result from the detachment of a uterine fibroid, which then acquires an independent blood supply from surrounding structures. They can present with symptoms similar to other abdominal or pelvic masses, such as progressive abdominal enlargement, menstrual irregularities, and pain. This case report describes a 39-year-old woman with a history of progressively increasing abdominal mass and severe menstrual bleeding, where initial imaging suggested a uterine fibroid but intraoperative findings revealed a coexisting parasitic leiomyoma.
