Flowline design of refractive optics

Formulas are presented for deriving optical surface vectors from arbitrary incoming and outgoing geometrical flux vector fields. 3D flowline surface shapes were demonstrated for a first order coaxial reflective system with various ´etendue matching criteria. A method is described for producing flowline solutions to higher order optical problems and demonstrated by example in a second order system with total internal reflecting and refracting modes.

Abstract

Formulas are presented for deriving optical surface vectors from arbitrary incoming and outgoing geometrical flux vector fields. 3D flowline surface shapes were demonstrated for a first order coaxial reflective system with various ´etendue matching criteria. A method is described for producing flowline solutions to higher order optical problems and demonstrated by example in a second order system with total internal reflecting and refracting modes.
