FINISH: flowline interpretation of nonimaging systems with heuristics

Nonimaging optics achieves thermodynamic limits by leveraging boundary to boundary design rather than traditional ray-tracing paradigms, offering profound implications for efficient energy transfer in radiative heat, photovoltaic, and illumination systems. This paper introduces a novel framework—FINISH (Flowline Interpretation of Non-Imaging Systems with Heuristics)—which emphasizes the role of the vector potential in unifying flowline optics with the string method. Building on the geometric flux field, or flowline field, we demonstrate how the vector potential provides an alternative method for computing etendue, the geometric measure of the capacity for energy exchange between two surfaces. This reveals a precise correspondence between the string method and etendue conservation in both 2D and 3D configurations of nonimaging optics. By interpreting the vector potential as a gauge-invariant quantity—one that introduces an additional degree of freedom—we resolve long-standing consistency issues at boundaries in systems such as the Asymmetric Compound Elliptical Concentrator (ACEC). We illustrate how different regions of the flowline field must be treated to ensure smooth transitions in the vector potential across flowline regions. Moreover, the vector potential can be computed using simple line integrals rather than surface integrals, drastically reducing computational complexity. This vector potential–centric perspective not only bridges classical string methods with modern flowline heuristics but also unlocks new application opportunities in x-ray optics, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) systems, and artificial spatially intelligent, paving the way for computationally efficient solutions in real-world applications.
