Improved efficiency automotive animated turn signal projector utilizing tandem free-form light control surfaces and etendue pinch devices

An improved efficiency optical system design converts the light source of the LED chip into the shape of the intended object projection through a combination of etendue pinching and free-form lens elements to pre-collimate and shape the light prior to final projection to the road surface. This results in a 5x efficiency improvement, enhanced ambient contrast ratio, reduced power, and improves the integration potential of this device. Non-imaging raytracing simulations are compared with a benchmarked road signal projector system.
