Le regard de Claudel sur la langue anglaise et ses approches de traductions de l’anglais
English, more than any other language, opened the door to the whole world for Claudel, because of its linguistic and cultural links with German, Latin, Old French, and the Far East. He spoke English, wrote in English, not only for his diplomatic writings: this language is everywhere in his work, for instance in his Journal, with many references to English and American authors. Claudel is also a translator who conceptualizes translation: «This call from your mouth: Try! | Resonates deep in my entrails». The translation itself is an effort, “try,” to reach the other in his body and his whole being, through the sound that “resounds”.
