DAWN: coproducing predictive decision support systems using enhanced NOAA operational climate forecasts to improve agricultural operations
Agricultural producers face complex challenges from climate anomalies, economic pressures, and environmental concerns. Funded by the USDA, the Dashboard for Agricultural Water use and Nutrient management (DAWN) project supports Corn Belt farmers by providing actionable subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasts. DAWN integrates NOAA climate forecasts, coupled climate-crop modeling, and machine learning to deliver credible, user-friendly tools. The project emphasizes stakeholder engagement, integrating research, extension, and education to bridge science and practice. This presentation outlines DAWN’s framework, highlighting challenges in infrastructure, collaboration, and communication. By translating scientific advancements into operational tools, DAWN enhances decision-making, supports sustainable agriculture, and improves community engagement through iterative feedback and improved services.
