Pre-job training factors, training effectiveness and graduate employability in support of sustainable development: evidence from the SANAD program

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the associations between dimensions related to pre-job training and the effectiveness of training on graduate employability through direct and indirect pathways. Design/methodology/approach Using data from 309 SANAD trainees in the UAE, this research also contextualizes these dynamics within the broader framework of sustainable development, particularly aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), which promotes responsible consumption and production. The study employed a deductive, quantitative approach grounded in human capital theory. Findings Findings demonstrate that training effectiveness partially mediates the relationship between pre-job training factors and employability. Moreover, trainees’ prior expectations significantly moderate this relationship. By fostering employability and aligning training outcomes with national sustainability agendas, particularly SDG 12, the SANAD training program contributes to reducing inefficiencies and resource misallocations in the labor market. Originality/value Future research may explore how sustainability-aligned training content enhances long-term employability outcomes. This paper contributes to both employability literature and the intersection of training effectiveness with sustainability frameworks.
