Applications of Muon Flux Tomography in assessment of civil engineering structures

The development of natural and highly penetrating Muon Flux Technology has been rapid in the past five years. The technology has a lot of potential in assessing existing structures more in-depth and reliably but also has some limitations in measurement time and deployment compared to other common non-destructive technologies. Since 2023, GScan has done multiple measurements on different civil engineering structures, but most of the attention has been on critical roadway bridges. Through monitoring the muons and reconstruction of the reality using scattering phenomena, the technology is used to visualize internal elements like rebars, strands, voids, and potential loss of steel section or grouting with sample test bodies within UK National Highways development project Structures Moonshot and live bridge measurement project in Estonia. The paper will give an overview of the challenges of hardware deployment, remote data collection and automated detection of hidden elements using convolutional neural networks trained on simulation data.
