Experimental observation of a new photonic crystal bandgap formation mechanism

We experimentally demonstrate a novel photonic crystal bandgap formation resulting from transverse-longitudinal wave coupling. The role of subwavelength unit cell design and multipole analysis in explaining this new bandgap formation will be discussed.
