Inverse-Designed Tapers for Compact Conversion Between Single-Mode and Wide Waveguides

We present the novel L-taper, a taper device geometry which enables massive footprint savings (12× demonstrated) for tapers between single-mode and arbitrarily wide waveguides. We demonstrate a -0.38dB transmission L-taper on a silicon-on-insulator process.

Abstract

We present the novel L-taper, a taper device geometry which enables massive footprint savings (12× demonstrated) for tapers between single-mode and arbitrarily wide waveguides. We demonstrate a -0.38dB transmission L-taper on a silicon-on-insulator process.
