Enhanced material removal rate of glass enabled by an ultrathin layer of gold

We report 7× reduction of the femtosecond laser ablation threshold and ~480× increase in the material removal rate of glass in the single-shot regime by an overlaid ~12.5 nm ultrathin layer of the sputtered gold.
