Deux voyages avec Claudel: “L’Annonce faite à Marie” en estonien
Translating is in some way a journey with the author. This journey was double in the case of Tõnu Õnnepalu, who was led to translate the same play by Claudel, The Annunciation of Marie, twice. Asked by a director, he conceived a first translation that was not followed up. Contacted twenty years later to propose correcting his translation, he decided instead to embark on a new one, without relying on the first. In the end, it was the first version that always retained the predilection of the actors, who had never stopped reading and loving it for twenty years.
