EINSTEIN: enhanced integrated nuclear systems for transmutation and efficient isolation of nuclides

Transmutation systems based on different drivers and targets (XDS facilities) have been proposed to reduce the radiotoxicity of used nuclear fuel (UNF). We are developing a Techno-Economic Analysis framework informed by a dynamic data library integrated with a large-scale system simulator for rapidly evaluating and comparing various transmutation technologies. We will conduct experimental campaigns to measure a prioritized list of quantities including key reactions and fission yields to fill the gaps in experimental data. Among the data of interest, we simulated the measurement of 19F(n,n’γ) reaction cross section with an HPGe detector and demonstrated it is feasible to obtain a <1% uncertainty with a measurement time of 1 hour. Ultimately, we aim to provide a detailed assessment of viable technologies at all UNF transmutation stages and their associated cost basis to inform future commercial applications.
