Design and performance of a double bounce multilayer monochromator for the multimodal high-energy x-ray diffraction beamline 11-ID-D

11-ID-D is an enhanced beamline at the upgraded Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory designed to allow rapid and simultaneous x-ray diffraction, total scattering, and small scattering measurements of materials and devices under extreme, in situ and in operando conditions. Key to this functionality is 11-ID-D’s unique double bounce multilayer (ML) monochromator which will host multiple distinct ML stripes enabling a nearly continuous energy selection between 40 and 130 keV and fully utilize the flux of a harmonic of the beamline’s undulator insertion device (ID). In order to offer an exceptional range of tunability, enhance harmonic suppression, and achieve performance at high energies, new techniques were developed for the design and deposition of ML stripes with a d-spacing of ∼ 20˚A. The properties of these stripes were tested both experimentally and numerically revealing a highly efficient, tunable ML system with a high reflectance, exceptional higher harmonic suppression, and an energy bandwidth matched to bandwidth of the ID source harmonics. In this report, the properties of these ML are detailed as well as their use and the characteristics of the 11-ID-D beamline.
