Enhancing Gain in Non-Hermitian Photonic Crystals with Lossy Topological Defects

Lossy defects in one- and two-dimensional non-Hermitian photonic crystals are shown to exhibit gain enhancement that exceeds that of lossless defects. Our work highlights the counterintuitive role of loss in enhancing gain in non-Hermitian systems.
