<i>In situ</i> crystallization of the tetrahydrate of pentafluoro-benzenesulfonic acid, featuring the <i>Eigen</i> ion (H 9 O 4 ) +

Abstract The tetra-hydrate of pentafluorobenzene sulfonic acid has been crystallized using an in situ technique on a single crystal diffractometer ( <m:math xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <m:mrow> <m:mi>P</m:mi> <m:mover accent="true"> <m:mn>1</m:mn> <m:mo>‾</m:mo> </m:mover> </m:mrow> </m:math> $P\overline{1}$ , Z = 2, a = 705.65(3) pm, b = 761.62(3) pm, c = 1,132.34(4) pm, α = 91.492(2)°, β = 102.974(2)°, γ = 90.718(2)°). It turns out that the compound has to be described according to (H 9 O 4 )[C 6 F 5 SO 3 ]. It contains the so-called Eigen ion which is a combination of a central H 3 O + and three H 2 O molecules attached by hydrogen bonds.
