Reviving heritage through regenerative tourism and community empowerment for sustainable futures
The escalating global threats to cultural heritage have intensified the exploration of regenerative tourism as a transformative approach. Distinct from conventional conservation models, regenerative tourism emphasizes the active restoration and revitalization of heritage sites while simultaneously promoting the development of resilient and empowered communities. This study investigates the nexus between regenerative tourism practices and community empowerment as a strategic pathway toward achieving sustainable heritage preservation. Employing conceptual analysis and illustrative global case studies, the research delineates key strategies that integrate active community engagement with heritage revitalization initiatives. The findings demonstrate that community-driven projects, nature-based interventions, and participatory governance models substantially strengthen cultural heritage conservation and socio-economic resilience. This study proposes an integrated model for advancing sustainable development objectives within heritage sectors by synthesizing regenerative tourism principles with empowerment frameworks. Furthermore, the research identifies critical success factors, challenges, and policy considerations, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of communities as proactive custodians of their cultural heritage in a regenerative paradigm.
