The mediating role of self-perceived burden in the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in patients after anal fistula surgery

Objective To explore the mediating effect of self-perceived burden on the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in patients after anal fistula surgery. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 294 patients who underwent anal fistula surgery at the Colorectal Surgery Department of The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from August to December 2024. A self-designed general information questionnaire, the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), the Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were administered. Results The total score of SF-36 was (481. 08 ± 137. 05), the SPB score was (24. 94 ± 10. 03), and the psychological resilience score was (69. 38 ± 16. 09). Quality of life was negatively correlated with SPB (P<0. 01), positively correlated with psychological resilience (P<0. 01), and SPB was negatively correlated with psychological resilience (P<0. 01). Self-perceived burden played a partial mediating role between psychological resilience and quality of life, accounting for 24. 82% of the total effect. Conclusion Self-perceived burden partially mediates the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in post-operative anal fistula patients. Clinical practitioners should implement targeted interventions to reduce Self-perceived burden and enhance psychological resilience, thereby improving patients' quality of life.
