Participation Experiences in Korean Traditional Dance Workshops : A Case Study of Kim Jin-geol’s Sanjo Dance
This study investigates participant experiences in workshops centered on Kim Jin-geol’s Sanjo Dance, which, despite being designated as the first in the "Masterpiece Dance" series and recognized for its artistic distinctiveness, currently faces challenges in sustainability. The objective is to examine participants’ perceptions before and after engaging in the workshop and to explore directions for future development. In-depth interviews were conducted with 22 individuals who participated in the Kim Jin-geol Sanjo Dance workshops. The findings indicate that participants are primarily recruited through internal networks and peer recommendations rather than external promotional efforts. Workshop participation is characterized by repeated attendance, high satisfaction, and positive post-participation behavior. These results suggest that Korean dance workshops serve as a mechanism to intensify interest in traditional dance and to stimulate sustained participation. Strategic approaches to reinforce these motivations are warranted.
