Sports ideas inherent in British sports and the birth and development of modern sports: Focusing on Puritan though
This study investigates the origins of the modern sports spirit in England by examining the ideological influence of Puritan thought on early British sports culture. While contemporary sports often overlook their foundational values, this research revisits the moral and educational significance that Puritan ethics-marked by conscience, perseverance, and love-infused into sports such as tennis, golf, and rugby. These values aligned closely with the amateur spirit and shaped the moral conscience across England’s social classes.<br/> By tracing the ideological trajectory of the Puritan influence on sport, the study aims to diagnose key challenges posed by the postmodern era and propose a framework for ethical renewal in sports. It argues that rediscovering the foundational sports spirit rooted in Puritan ideology can provide meaningful insight into the current identity crisis in modern sports and offer a path forward. Ultimately, this work highlights the enduring relevance of the Puritan legacy in preserving the essential character and educational function of sports.
