Development of textile design using the image of the traditional Korean Chiu ChenWang.
Chiu Chunwang is an important figure in the ancient history and myths of Korea, and he is a valiant idol with the myth of undefeated in all wars. As a medium of formative art with strategic and artistic value in the competition of global culture, he has unique cultural originality. This study aims to develop an expandable textile design as a cultural content by analyzing the value and formative aspects of the Chiu Chunwang pattern with traditional motifs. To this end, we analyzed the symbolism and formative characteristics of cultural heritage using literature and visual data, and realized practical design through re-analysis based on the analysis results. For example, the Chiu Chunwang pattern is expressed actively and vividly by reflecting unique, dynamic, and restrained aspects. Through distortion, repetition, uniformity, and exaggeration, Chiu Chunwang’s eyes, nose, mouth, rake, and body were reorganized into one-off forms to complete a total of five textile designs. Through this, it was confirmed that the expressive, taxonomic, formative expression, concrete formative elements, and symbolic meanings of the emperor could be expanded to cultural contents. If traditional Korean culture is re-interpreted, the dynamics and humorous aspects of Chiu Chunwang can create differentiated values of Korean traditional culture through the expansion of it.
