Green hydrogen microgrids for remote areas: design, assessment, and feasibility

This article presents a methodological framework for designing and evaluating green hydrogen-based microgrids (MGs) for of-grid electrification. The approach includes data collection, MG sizing, and an assessment of environmental, economic, and technical indicators, along with scenario and sensitivity analyses. The results highlight the potential of green hydrogen MGs to provide a continuous and reliable energy supply while minimizing energy losses and emissions. However, high capital costs, particularly for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, remain a challenge. The study concludes that cost reductions, technological advancements, and improved efficiency are essential for making green hydrogen MGs viable for rural electrification.
