Ancillary Services through Coordinated Distributed Power Electronic Converters in Three-Phase Microgrids

Power electronic converters play a critical role in microgrids by enabling efficient integration of distributed energy resources with the grid. Beyond the core active power control function, converters operation can be optimized to reduce power losses by compensating reactive power, as well as mitigating negative-sequence and zero-sequence currents. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy leveraging a distributed primal-dual optimization framework to coordinate converters operation across the network. By utilizing a distributed approach, our method preserves privacy among local systems, allowing each converter to operate with minimal information exchange while achieving overall grid optimization. The results demonstrate that this approach not only reduces conversion losses but also improves power quality at critical points within the microgrid, validating the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed method.
