Interfaith Dialogue as the Face of Moderation: A Study of Tolerance Movement in Cyber Space

This article examines the urgency of interfaith dialogue as a manifestation of religious moderation in the digital space of modern society. The main objective of this study is to analyze how interfaith dialogue content on the online platforms “Jeda Nulis,” “Noice,” and “Cahaya Untuk Indonesia” can contribute to the creation of harmony and brotherhood, with a focus on the implementation of universal religious values and the principle of ukhuwwah. The article employs a qualitative approach and Christine Hine's virtual ethnography method to analyze interfaith dialogue content, particularly on visual and audio-based platforms, to understand the dynamics of interaction and narrative construction. Key findings indicate that the digital space, with its inherent potential for cross-faith collaboration, is an effective medium for disseminating messages of tolerance. Successful content actively emphasizes values such as social responsibility, mutual respect, pluralism, peace, equality, brotherhood, justice, accountability, freedom, and honesty, which tangibly shape an inclusive and compassionate religious civilization. The academic implications of this research are significant as it enriches digital ethnographic studies in the context of religious phenomena, provides specific empirical insights into the mechanisms of interfaith dialogue on social media, and contributes to the sociology of religion literature in the digital age. Although this article underscores the importance of utilizing cyberspace to support tolerance education, further research is needed to identify optimal strategies for promoting religious inclusivity through online dialogue.
