Academic Recovery Program for Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
This promising practice article explores the implementation of an academic recovery pro- gram along with supplemental programs at a small liberal arts Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the southeastern United States, Miles College. Miles is an open-enrollment institution, where most students are Pell Grant eligible, first-generation, or coming from underserved high schools. With this combination of factors in mind and the vulnerability of this population, academic support services were designed to address student needs more proactively in a holistic manner rather than only addressing academic concerns. Components of this program included an early alert program, an academic recovery program, professional tutoring, peer tutoring, and academic coaching.
