Gigahertz bandwidth pyroelectric photodetector integrated with metasurface

Pyroelectric photodetectors leverages temperature changes from absorbed light and convert it into electrical signals. One challenge for pyroelectric photodetector development is achieving faster response times because of slow thermal diffusion, large RC time constants, and inadequate light absorption. We will discuss here, how metasurface-integrated pyroelectric photodetectors can enable ultrafast photodetection. By leveraging near-perfect absorption and heat generation within a metasurface, these devices achieve gigahertz-range bandwidth with picosecond rise times. High responsivity, and spectral selectivity make them ideal for future, advanced on-chip sensing applications, offering high-speed, low-power performance in compact, multifunctional photodetection platforms. Such a design paves the way for next-generation photonic systems requiring rapid, low-loss signal transduction.
