Novel trends in optronic imaging
This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in optronic imaging technologies tailored for military applications, emphasizing their critical role in enhancing situational awareness and operational effectiveness. As battlefield requirements evolve, modern optronic sensors have achieved significant improvements in spatial resolution and spectral coverage, extending sensitivity into the near-infrared (NIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) bands. This broad wavelength coverage enables superior detection, identification and target penetration across diverse operational environments, including adverse weather and low visibility conditions. A key focus of the paper are the multispectral and coincident imaging techniques and their potentials. Multispectral imaging captures data across multiple spectral bands, allowing for detailed spectral signature extraction that enhances target discrimination and reduces false alarms. Coincident imaging, which involves simultaneous acquisition of images from different spectral bands, further improves target contrast and detection reliability, particularly in missile warning systems where rapid threat identification with low false alarm rates is essential. The emergence of event-based sensors is also explored, offering innovative solutions for real-time surveillance by capturing only changes in the scene, thus reducing data volume and image exploration latency. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into image processing workflows is transforming traditional imaging methods, enabling automated feature extraction and target recognition with unprecedented accuracy. The paper highlights the latest sensor technologies developed by HENSOLDT Optronics, showcasing modular platforms designed for harsh military environments. In conclusion, advanced optronic imaging technologies are essential for maintaining tactical advantages in increasingly complex operational scenarios, providing military forces with enhanced situational awareness and improved target engagement capabilities.
