Efficiency Improvement in a Class F Power Amplifier Using a Square Wave Signal at 1 GHz

This paper investigates the power efficiency of a Class F power amplifier at 1GHz for radar applications. We proposed a clipping operation in the transistor input. A comparison between sine wave and square/clipped wave approximation as signal sources reveals improved drain efficiency (67.3% to 72.0%) and PAE (64.9% to 67.9%) for a signal power of 27 dBm.

Abstract

This paper investigates the power efficiency of a Class F power amplifier at 1GHz for radar applications. We proposed a clipping operation in the transistor input. A comparison between sine wave and square/clipped wave approximation as signal sources reveals improved drain efficiency (67.3% to 72.0%) and PAE (64.9% to 67.9%) for a signal power of 27 dBm.
