Implementation of 50G/100G IM-PON

In this paper, we present simulation results for 50G and 100G PON, considering IM-NRZ with 2 and 4 amplitude levels. It is considered external modulation of an optical source in the transmitter and direct detection using APD/PIN in the receiver, to emulate real PON scenarios at these high-speed rates, also studying the impact of fiber. The performance assessment of the SER as a function of ROP is shown for distances of 10 km and 4 km for 50G and 100G setups, respectively. The results lead us to conclude that, although there is a power penalty associated with four amplitude levels, compared to two, for back-to-back configurations, the fiber impact is reduced for the 4-level setup since the decrease in symbol rate results in lower chromatic dispersion impact.
