Causal Modeling for Student Major Selection Decisions
This paper proposes a probabilistic causal model to analyze the factors influencing engineering students' selection of their major program within an engineering faculty. These factors include passion, skills, job market confidence, family and peer pressures. The study employs Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to explore associations between latent and observed variables, leading to the development of a Structural Equation Model (SEM). The SEM reveals positive associations between latent variables such as 'Motivational Factors' and 'Perceived Seminar Effectiveness' with 'Student Major Selection'. This model provides a foundation for understanding the reasoning processes related to engineering program major selection. By identifying key drivers among these factors, universities can implement targeted strategies for personalized academic guidance, resource allocation, and program improvements.
