Design and Analysis of a C-Band Quadrifilar Helical Antenna for Radar Applications

A quadrifilar helical antenna (QHA) is proposed in this study for wideband radar applications in C-band. The round and strip helical radiating elements are combined to form the proposed antenna, where separate feedings are applied in each of the four arms. For the round and strip helix arms of the designed quadrifilar helical antenna, the height, coil radius, and pitch angle are kept as 8.85 mm, 3.3 mm, and 13.7° respectively. Moreover, the radius of the round helix arm is 0.4 mm and the width of the strip helix arm is 0.8 mm. This design is simulated in CST Microwave Studio, providing enhanced radar system performance. In the operating frequency band of 4-8 GHz, 5.27 dBi of gain is found in the free space. This antenna exhibits a resonance frequency of 4.448 GHz and an omnidirectional radiation pattern, which is suitable for C-band applications.
