Design and Performance Analysis of Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna For 5G Applications

This paper presents the design and performance analysis of a microstrip patch antenna optimized for high-frequency applications such as 5G and satellite communication. While microstrip patch antennas are lightweight and easily integrable within circuits, they are often limited by narrow bandwidths, low gain, surface wave losses, and challenges in impedance matching—especially in the 38–40 GHz range. To solve these issues, this study creates a novel slot configuration on a Rogers RT-5880 (lossy) substrate, designed and simulated using CST Studio Suite. The proposed design achieves a return loss of -28.28 dB, a gain of 7.57 dB, and an efficiency of 96.02% at an operating frequency of 38.575 GHz, with a bandwidth of 0.99 GHz. Besides, the design of slots has improved not only the antenna performance but also reduced the usage of the PEC material considerably, hence it is lightweight and economical. All these enhancements offer perfect impedance matching, minimum signal reflection, and effective radiation, hence a very good candidate for next-generation wireless communication systems.
