Performance Comparison of Multi-effect Solar Assisted Absorption Refrigeration Systems using LiBr-H2O and LiCl-H2O Working Pairs

The present study evaluates and compares the energy and exergy analysis of solar-assisted single effect, series flow double effect, and parallel flow double effect absorption cooling cycles using LiBr-H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O and LiCl-H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O working pairs. The analyses of these integrated systems aim to assess the effect of nanofluids on the coefficient of performance (COP) and the exergetic efficiency of the systems. For this system, we designed and simulated single effect, series flow double effect, and parallel flow double effect absorption cooling systems, all with a cooling capacity of 1000 kW, using engineering equation solver (EES) software. The concentration of nanoparticles is varied to examine the overall performance of the system. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid (Al<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf>-H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O) is observed to be 11.32% higher than that of pure water, while the heat transfer coefficient was found to be 33.43% higher than that of water (H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O). Additionally, the COP of the LiBr-H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O working pair was 6% higher than that of LiCl-H<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf>O working pair absorption cycles. The COP of the series flow double effect absorption cooling cycle was observed to be 55.5% higher compared to the single effect absorption cooling cycle, and the exergetic efficiency was observed to be 4% higher as compared to the single effect system.
