Dynamic Modeling and Operational Control Strategy for Advanced Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage Systems

This study investigates system integration and dynamic modeling of advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage (AA-CAES) power plants to support large-scale energy storage engineering. Existing AA-CAES subsystems are systematized, analyzing motor-compressor hierarchical control, generator-expander power regulation, and heat storage/exchanger thermodynamic coupling. Dynamic models of multivariable compression and isentropic expansion are established using massenergy conservation and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, with heat storage/exchanger distribution parameter models based on heat transfer principles. Integrating energy/material flow boundaries forms an overall AA-CAES dynamic model comprising compressed gas storage, expansion release, and thermal cycle modules. The model innovatively incorporates staged compression heat storage/utilization and dynamic expander inlet adjustment, accurately describing system responses during charge/discharge switching and load fluctuations. Results provide a theoretical tool for AA-CAES design optimization, operation strategy formulation, and dynamic analysis, advancing its engineering application.

Abstract

This study investigates system integration and dynamic modeling of advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage (AA-CAES) power plants to support large-scale energy storage engineering. Existing AA-CAES subsystems are systematized, analyzing motor-compressor hierarchical control, generator-expander power regulation, and heat storage/exchanger thermodynamic coupling. Dynamic models of multivariable compression and isentropic expansion are established using massenergy conservation and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, with heat storage/exchanger distribution parameter models based on heat transfer principles. Integrating energy/material flow boundaries forms an overall AA-CAES dynamic model comprising compressed gas storage, expansion release, and thermal cycle modules. The model innovatively incorporates staged compression heat storage/utilization and dynamic expander inlet adjustment, accurately describing system responses during charge/discharge switching and load fluctuations. Results provide a theoretical tool for AA-CAES design optimization, operation strategy formulation, and dynamic analysis, advancing its engineering application.
