Optimal Design of a Novel Multiturn Resolver Based on the Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Method

Resolvers are among the most important position sensors for detecting rotational, linear, and 2-DoF motion. Multispeed resolvers offer high-accuracy position detection but cannot provide absolute position information. To overcome this limitation, multi-turn resolvers have been introduced, which not only maintain high accuracy but also enable absolute position detection. Conventional multi-turn resolvers consist of two separate resolvers housed within a common frame. In this paper, a novel configuration of a multi-turn resolver is proposed, which significantly simplifies the existing design. To address the high computational burden of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) method is employed to optimize both the number of rotor slots and the number of excitation winding turns. The performance index of the proposed configuration demonstrates not only structural simplicity but also high accuracy. A prototype of the proposed resolver is developed to validate the simulation results.
