Light-driven reconfigurability in nonlinear polaritonics with structured light
Polaritonics and plasmonics offer enhanced light control at the nanoscale, but they are often hindered in their application by the lack of tunability and reconfigurability. Structured illumination, combined with the enhanced nonlinearities, can offer a powerful solution to overcome these challenges. By shaping the spatial, phase and polarization properties of an excitation beam, structured light can dynamically imprint and modulate nonlinear optical responses in a controlled and reconfigurable manner in a polaritonic film. This mimics the functionality of nano-patterning the film, but does not require complex nanofabrication, instead using light itself as an active tool for nanoscale optical engineering. This approach enables tunable wavefront shaping, selective mode coupling and enhanced frequency conversion, paving the way for advanced optical signal processing. Embracing structured light as a design parameter, bridging the gap between material-based and field-driven reconfigurability, unlocks new possibilities for adaptive polaritonic devices, ultrafast analog optical computing, and high-resolution imaging.
