Sizing and Simulation of a Micro Transformer Integrated into the Flyback Converter in the Photovoltaic System

This work aims to design compact power converters specifically tailored for photovoltaic systems, with a specific focus on reducing the size of its key component, the transformer. We achieve this by optimizing the geometric parameters of a square planar transformer, considering the converter's target power rating of 45 W and the various parasitic effects associated with its geometry, such as winding capacitance and leakage inductance. The approach utilizes in this paper based on combination of simulation tools. First, we dimensioned the transformer using established design equations and then integrated its electrical circuit, including the modelled parasitic effects, into the overall converter circuit. Simulations conducted in PSIM software validated the design, confirming that the current and output voltage waveforms of the Flyback converter with the miniaturized transformer conform to expected performance benchmarks found in the literature. Furthermore, we employed Finite element method to analyse the electromagnetic behaviour of the dimensioned transformer. This analysis allowed us to visualize and confirm the desired distribution of the magnetic field, electrical potential, and current density within the primary and secondary coils of the miniaturized transformer. Initial results are highly promising, demonstrating a significant reduction in the transformer's size while maintaining the required functionality. This miniaturization of the transformer directly translates to a notable decrease in the overall dimensions of the Flyback converter, paving the way for more compact and efficient photovoltaic systems.
