Organic neuromorphic biointerfaces

The replication of neural processing in electronics is widely studied, particularly for brain-computer interfaces requiring biocompatibility. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) based on PEDOT:PSS enable ionic-to-electronic signal transduction and mimic neural plasticity, including short-term facilitation and long-term potentiation. Electrolytes play a key role in signal transmission, influencing long-term memory through neurotransmitter oxidation. Neuromorphic OECTs can establish biohybrid synapses with neurons via bidirectional neurotransmitter communication. Additionally, integrating opto-sensitive azopolymers allows light-controlled plasticity, enhancing neuronal interfaces. These biomimetic materials offer new bioelectronic platforms for implantable probes, improving electromechanical coupling with cells for advanced neurohybrid technologies.
