Metasurface-based optical systems

Metasurfaces enable compact, multifunctional optical systems by precisely modulating light’s amplitude, phase, and polarization. We present recent advances applying metasurface optics to biomedical imaging tools, including optical sectioning, light sheet microscopy, and laser micro-profiling. A varifocal Moiré metalens integrated in a telecentric design enables 3D in-vivo imaging with constant magnification. Combined with deep learning, the system supports rapid HiLo sectioning and endoscopic imaging. For laser–tissue interaction, metasurface-generated abrupt autofocusing (AAF) beams achieve high-contrast energy delivery. Experiments demonstrate fluorescence-guided laser sculpting and photocoagulation in biological tissues. These results show the promise of metasurface optics in advancing compact, high-resolution biomedical instrumentation.

Abstract

Metasurfaces enable compact, multifunctional optical systems by precisely modulating light’s amplitude, phase, and polarization. We present recent advances applying metasurface optics to biomedical imaging tools, including optical sectioning, light sheet microscopy, and laser micro-profiling. A varifocal Moiré metalens integrated in a telecentric design enables 3D in-vivo imaging with constant magnification. Combined with deep learning, the system supports rapid HiLo sectioning and endoscopic imaging. For laser–tissue interaction, metasurface-generated abrupt autofocusing (AAF) beams achieve high-contrast energy delivery. Experiments demonstrate fluorescence-guided laser sculpting and photocoagulation in biological tissues. These results show the promise of metasurface optics in advancing compact, high-resolution biomedical instrumentation.
