Looking Ahead for Consensus

Language plays a crucial role in human cognition and social interactions, influencing processes like memory, communication, decision-making, and negotiation. This paper investigates the impact of linguistic relativity (LR), particularly through conceptual metaphors, on diplomatic negotiations. Taking Conceptual Metaphor Theory as a theoretical framework, it examines how different languages influence the conceptualisation of time in international negotiation contexts. Focusing on the metaphor time is space, the study analyses transcripts from United Nations Security Council debates during the Kosovo War (1998–1999). Through corpus linguistics methodology, English, French, and Spanish speeches were analysed to identify metaphorical expressions of time is space. The findings suggest that conceptual metaphors vary across languages, shaped by cultural and linguistic structures. In English, time is conceptualised in terms of spatial distance or quantity, depending on the characteristics of the frame, while in Spanish, time is predominantly understood as a measurable quantity. These distinctions imply that the cognitive framing of time as space, influenced by language, can affect negotiation strategies and outcomes. The paper underscores the relevance of LR in multilingual diplomatic environments, emphasising the need for negotiators to consider how linguistic and cultural differences shape cognitive processes. While the results highlight patterns in time conceptualisation, further research involving a broader range of languages and contexts is needed to deepen understanding. This interdisciplinary approach offers insights into the interconnectedness of language, culture, and cognition in global diplomacy.
