Implementation Of A Modified 5-3-1 Training Method On Strength Measures In Collegiate Baseball Players

Strength measures such as one-repetition maximum barbell back squat (1RMSQ) and one-repetition maximum trap bar deadlift (1RMTB) have been demonstrated to have a positive effect on performance variables across multiple levels of baseball. The intervention strategies used to improve these strength measures in baseball players, specifically at the Division II level is limited within the literature. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a modified 5-3-1 training method on strength measures in NCAA Division II baseball players across a fall season. METHODS: Seventeen NCAA Division II baseball athletes (age: 19.76 ± 1.80 years, height: 70.47 ± 4.00 inches, mass: 186.88 ± 22.03 pounds) volunteered for this study. Participants were involved in a 14-week strength and conditioning program throughout their non-competition season. The modified 5-3-1 training method for all barbell back squat and trap bar deadlift training in conjunction with supplemental accessory exercises were progressed in a block periodization method in line with standard progressive overload principles. RESULTS: 1RMSQ was significantly different at post testing (t = 4.869, r = <.001). 1RMTB was also significantly different at post testing (t = 7.605, r = <.001). CONCLUSIONS: There was a significant improvement in strength measures following the 14-week strength and conditioning program. SIGNIFICANCE/NOVELTY: This study found that implementing a modified 5-3-1 method of training for barbell back squat and trap bar deadlift can result in significant strength improvements in NCAA Division II baseball players. Future studies should look to evaluate the impact of this training method in other sports, as well as comparing this method to other strength and conditioning protocols used at the NCAA Division II level.
