Identification And Interpretation Of Playing Styles In The National Football League (NFL).
: In the National Football League (NFL), the ability to predict opposition behaviors informs critical decision-making. Nonetheless, understanding differences in offensive and defensive patterns of play has emerged as a limitation in American Football performance analytics. While evidence suggests that situational variables are crucial in predicting play design, the unquantified role of playing styles continues to confound current perceptions of team interactions. PURPOSE: To employ a data-driven approach to identify and interpret styles of play in the NFL using exclusively offensive and defensive performance metrics. METHODS: To explore underlying structures representative of playing styles and their characteristics, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the data by determining the extent of relationships among performance variables (n = 46). Collected over five NFL seasons (2018-2022) from publicly available first, and third-party sources, performance metrics ranging from passing and rushing yards to more granular derivates including completed air yards and rush tackles broken were included in the research design to account for subtle variance among team styles of play. RESULTS: Feature extraction using optimal coordinates derived 8 features accounting for 57% of the total variance within the dataset. The findings outlined five offensive, and three defensive features indicative of distinct areas of performance. Direct oblimin (oblique) rotation identified a low yet meaningful positive correlation between the short and long passing latent variables (.35). Offensively, yards before and after the catch or contact, alongside third down success were associated with rushing, scrambling, and three passing related playing styles. Defensively, the inclusion of exclusively defensive action variables led to 3 factors, interpreted as quarterback (passing) suppression, defensive perturbations, and tackling proficiency. CONCLUSION: These predominantly uncorrelated latent variables provide a simple and interpretable structure for further analysis - providing a tangible tool for the design of training drills, and accurate simulation of competition scenarios, in addition to contextualizing coaches’ and coordinators’ decision-making processes.
