Oral expression and its difficulties in the fle classroom

Institutional language teaching aims to develop learners’ oral and written communicative skills. Emphasis is placed on methods that encourage active learning, such as dialogues in context, simulations and role-playing, to re-use acquired vocabulary and structures. These activities encourage imagination, creativity and the integration of non-verbal aspects. The simulated ‘I’, where the learner adopts another identity, reduces anxiety and facilitates oral expression. However, continuous speaking remains under-exploited, even though it is more demanding. It requires uninterrupted personal expression, which is often lacking in courses where interaction is encouraged. Assessment can also be intimidating for students. A structured and motivating approach is essential if oral language is to be taught effectively. Teachers need to receive training on the new syllabuses and adapt the content to the level and age of the learners to optimise their progress. Communication remains the essential aim of learning a foreign language.
