Mode-Weighting in Metasurface Designs for MRI Signal Enhancement

Motivation: Resonators based on metamaterials (metasurfaces) can improve the imaging properties of the integrated MRI scanner coils. Goal(s): The goal was to modify the resonance frequency of the metamaterial towards the Larmor frequency (mode-weighting) in order to achieve a higher SNR with these mode-weighted metasurfaces. Approach: Simulations and MRI measurements of the mode-weighted metasurface were performed on a phantom to evaluate |B1-| maps, SNR maps and transmit decoupling. Results: The mode-weighting caused an increase in simulated |B1-| maps of up to 20.1 % and for the measured SNR maps by 6 %. If the mode-weighting is too high the transmission decoupling progressively becomes worse. Impact: It is possible to improve the reception sensitivity of metasurfaces coupled to the integrated spine coil by mode-weighting and thus optimize quasi cable-free MR imaging.
