Brain T1 Relaxation Time Changes After Acute Exercise
Motivation: Brain T1 relaxation time changes following a single session of acute exercise has not been investigated. Goal(s): This study aims to investigate the effects of a single session of aerobic exercise on brain T1. Approach: A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T1 mapping sequence was used to measure the global and regional brain T1 before and after 8-15 minutes of cycling exercise in 18 healthy subjects. Results: The global and regional brain T1 was generally deceased right after exercise and started to recover shortly. However, T1 of the left insula and certain areas of the temporal poles was significantly increased. Impact: We found that a single session of aerobic exercise can induce significant and region-specific T1 changes in the brain, offering a novel perspective for brain studies in addition to current functional and perfusion MRI.
