Long-term monitoring bone porosity in vivo T1DM Rabbits using UTE-MRI

Motivation: Given the high fracture risk associated with Type 1 diabetes, especially in cortical bone-rich regions, precise assessment beyond bone mineral density (BMD) is essential. Goal(s): This study aims to investigate the feasibility of the porosity index (PI) derived from ultrashort echo time MRI (UTE-MRI) to assess cortical bone porosity and geometry changes. Approach: Using a T1DM rabbit model, we applied UTE-MRI to monitor cortical bone porosity over time, validated against micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), histology, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) in both diabetic and control groups. Results: Increased PI in diabetic rabbits was correlated with impaired bone remodeling processes, compared to control rabbits. Impact: UTE-MRI is feasible to assess cortical bone porosity and geometry in T1DM, offering a non-invasive, radiation-free method to evaluate bone health. This technique supports fracture evaluation and management guideline in diabetic patients, improving clinical outcomes.
