Charting cortical-layer specific area boundaries using Gibbs’ ringing attenuated T1w/T2w-FLAIR myelin MRI
Motivation: Traditionally, cortical areas are defined by their distinctive layer cyto- and/or myeloarchitecture using postmortem histology. Goal(s): Develop MRI-based method to map myeloarchitectonic cortical layer-specific area boundaries. Approach: We introduce a novel T1w/T2w-FLAIR method to attenuate Gibbs' ringing artefact with image resolution matched to mean thickness of a cortical layer. Results: Our approach delineates layer-specific cortical area boundaries, validated against Gallyas-stained myelin histology, and yields a new 182-area parcellation of the macaque cerebral cortex. Impact: This cortical layer myelin MRI method shows strong potential for precise cortical area mapping and cross-species comparisons in a noninvasive manner.
